Gemaakt aan het begin van de zomer. De kneutjes waren druk bezig hun jongen te voeren. Na wat schijnbewegingen dook het vrouwtje diep de braamstruiken in, het mannetje bleef op wacht staan.
At the beginning of summer, the linnets were busy feeding their young. First soime distracting moves, then the female penetrated the brambles, whilst the male stood guard.
Toen ik uit de auto stapte om een landschapsfoto te maken, struikelde ik bijna over de familie moerassneeuwhoen. Twee adulten, vijf jongen, een poosje nog te volgen, daarna onvindbaar. Op Langoya, Noorwegen.

Een maand geleden gemaakt; het had toen net gestormd en wie weet was deze Kleine Burgemeester wel naar de kust gewaaid.
I took this picture of an Iceland Gull about a month ago. It had stormed, and perhaps the bird was blown of track to these shores.
Een zwerm sneeuwgorzen; deze deed me het plezier pal voor de lens zijn veren te herschikken. Net een danser.

A flock of snow buntings. This one redid his feathres just in front of the lens. He looked like a dancer to me.
Onlangs tuurde ik naar een groepje Zwarte Ruiters in de hoop dat ze dichterbij kwamen zodat ik ze fatsoenlijk op de plaat kon zetten. Daardoor zag ik bijna al die mooie vogeltjes over het hoofd, die vlak voor mijn neus zaten uit te rusten. Er zijn zoveel spreeuwen, dat hun schoonheid verloren gaat in de massa. Een foto gemaakt om mezelf daar aan te herinneren.
The other day I was wanting for a flock of spotted redshanks to come closer and I almost didn’t notice the many beautiful birds that rested nearby. There’s such an abundancy of Common Starlings that the beauty of the bird gets lost in the masses. Not a hard picture to take, and not a photographic or birding challenge, but a reminder to self that beauty is nearby.
Om zelf een antwoord te geven op mijn vraag: ik dacht van wel! Deze snip hield ik al een poos in de gaten, in de hoop dat hij mooi vrij zou lopen. Het lichtje in het oog trok de aandacht, ik drukte af en dat leverde dit vreemde beeld op. Het is net alsof de vogel zijn snavel is verloren, of dat hij een heel klein snaveltje heeft, verborgen in zijn veren.
I don’t know of the mental processes of a common snipe, but the bird sure enough manages to look behind itself! It’s a bit disturbing sight in my opinion, just as if the bird has lost its beak, or has a tiny one hidden in the feathers.
Een heerlijke nazomer dezer dagen. Een zacht briesje, de zon die iets wordt gefilterd en een zachte temperatuur. Prima weer om erop uit te trekken. Deze rosse grutto trof ik in z’n eentje fouragerend aan. Het was opkomend tij; ik moets ervoor zorgen dat m’n spullen en ikzelf droog bleven. De grutto was zo druk bezig z’n maaltje bij elkaar te scharrelen dat hij soms naar ondieper water moest zwemmen. Een zwemmende grutto zag ik nog niet eerder.
Indian summer kind of weather these days: a soft breeze, a slightly shaded sun and a temperature that feels soft to the skin. All in all perfect for birding. This bar-tailed godwit I found harvesting alone along the shoreline. The tide was coming in so I had to look out for the gear and myself not getting wet. The godwit was so busy getting its meal together it sometimes had to swim to shallower waters, a sight I had not seen before.
Er zijn nu heel wat doortrekkers te zien en fotograferen, jammer genoeg niet meer in dat prachtige zomerkleed. De Zwarte Ruiter doet me altijd denken aan die fraaie plaat van Tom Waits: The Black Rider 
With the changing of the seasons, it’s quite easy to spot spotted redshanks. They make a pitstop here before migrating further south. They have already shed their quite spectacular black summer/breeding dressing for the winterplumage. The literal translation of their Dutch name is Black Rider, and therefore the bird always makes me think of Tom Waits’ musical effort by that name.
In de analoge tijd had een camera soms een fluisterstand. Dan werd de film extra langzaam getransporteerd, om de omgeving zo min mogelijk te verstoren.
In het digitale tijdperk zet ik mijn auto, een Prius, soms in de fluisterstand zodat hij alleen op de accu rijdt. Bijvoorbeeld om zo dicht mogelijk bij deze jonge tapuit te komen – een mannetje, al in herfstkleed. Geen idee of het echt helpt, maar ik kwam wel dichtbij.
In the analog days, some camera’s came with a whispermode. It transported the film slowely, so as not to disturb the scene.
